What is a prompt?
In one line
Ages 8 to 10: A prompt is what you ask or tell an AI, and it is where the AI's answer starts.
Ages 11 to 13: A prompt is the starting text an AI language model continues, so changing the words can change the reply.
Ages 14 to 18: A prompt is the context a language model conditions on; the app may add its own instructions, and the output is a likely continuation, not a verified answer.
A prompt is the message you give an AI system to tell it what you want: a question, an instruction or some text to continue. The AI uses your prompt as its starting point and writes what is likely to come next. A clear prompt helps, but the reply still needs checking.

The idea in one picture
Think of a story chain at a campfire. The first person says, "Once upon a time, a cat found a key..." and the next person carries on from there. Change the opening line and the whole story goes somewhere else. A prompt is that opening line: the AI carries on from whatever you start with.
Worked example. Two prompts about the same topic:
- "Tell me about volcanoes." → a general reply that could go in many directions.
- "In three short sentences for a 9-year-old, explain why volcanoes erupt." → a reply with a clear length, reader and question.
The second prompt gives the AI more to work from. It still does not guarantee the facts are right.
How it works, step by step
- You write a prompt: a question, an instruction or a starting sentence.
- The AI splits your prompt into small pieces called tokens.
- A large language model uses those tokens to predict a likely next token.
- It adds that token and predicts again, using your prompt plus everything it has written so far.
- When it stops, you get the reply. A new prompt starts the process again.
A little deeper (ages 11 to 13)
Why does a question get an answer instead of just more questions? Because the model learned from huge amounts of text where answers often follow questions, and it was trained further on examples of instructions followed by helpful replies. So the most likely continuation of a question is usually an answer. "Likely" is the key word: the model picks what fits the pattern, which is why a clear prompt helps and why checking still matters.
Going further (ages 14 to 18)
In technical terms, a prompt is the context the model conditions on when it generates text. Apps often add their own instructions before yours, called a system prompt, which set rules and tone you may not see. Everything in the context, including documents or web pages the app adds, can steer the output. That is useful, and it is also the weakness behind prompt injection, where hidden instructions inside added text try to take over. Some AI tools that make pictures also start from a written prompt.
Common mix-ups
- Mix-up: "A good prompt makes the answer true."Fact: A prompt shapes the reply; it cannot make the model check facts. Wrong answers can still appear, which is called a [hallucination](/glossary/hallucination/).
- Mix-up: "There is one magic prompt."Fact: Different wording can give different replies, and the same prompt can give different replies on different tries.
- Mix-up: "The AI only sees what I typed."Fact: Many apps add their own instructions and earlier messages to the context.
- Mix-up: "Polite words don't matter."Fact: Wording, including tone, is part of the context the model continues from.
Try it (no device, 5 minutes)
Prompt the drawer. One person is the "AI" and draws only exactly what they are told. Prompt 1: "Draw an animal." Prompt 2: "Draw a small brown dog sitting under a tree, side view." Compare the two drawings. Then try a sneaky one: "Draw a dog, but make it purple and huge." Talk about it: which words changed the drawing most? Did a clearer prompt make the drawing "true", or just closer to what you wanted?

A prompt is the message you give an AI system to tell it what you want, such as a question, an instruction or text to continue. The AI uses it as the starting point for its reply.
The AI predicts what is likely to come next after your prompt, so different words lead to different likely continuations. Adding details such as length, reader and the exact question gives it more to work from.
No. A clear prompt helps the reply fit what you asked, but the AI can still state wrong things. Check important answers with a trusted source.
A system prompt is a set of instructions an app adds before your message, often hidden from you. It sets rules and tone for how the model replies.
Many AI tools take a written prompt, and some also accept spoken words or images. Whatever form it takes, the prompt is the starting point the AI works from.
Mechna Academy is a city of machines for curious children aged 8 to 18, opening first to ages 8 to 10. In each mission, a child guesses how a machine decides, then opens its Peek Hatch to check, changes one thing and tests it on a case it has never seen. Children learn how AI works this way, and they never chat with an AI.
