AI for kids: guides for parents
Mechna Academy's guides are answer-first guides for parents and guardians of children aged 8 to 18. They explain how AI works, and what to check before your child uses an AI app, tutor, chatbot or toy, plus how to choose a STEM gift. Each guide answers its question in the first paragraph and shows when it was last reviewed.

New to the topic? Start with What is AI literacy for kids?. It explains, in plain words, what children need to understand about AI from age 8 to 18, then links on to machine learning.
What should my child understand about AI?
Start with the ideas. These two guides explain how AI learns, for children and teens, with an activity you can try at home without a device.
- What is AI literacy for kids? What AI literacy means: how AI learns from examples, why it can sound sure and still be wrong, and who decides.↗
- Machine learning for kids, explained with one machineHow machines learn, shown with one toast-sorting machine: examples, a rule, a test on new cases and one wrong answer.↗
How do I check an AI app, tutor or chatbot?
These checklists work before your child signs up for anything. Each one says why a question matters and what a good answer looks like.
- AI learning apps for kids: what to check before you chooseSix questions before you choose an AI learning app, from live AI chat and data to ads, session length and parent controls.↗
- AI tutors for kids: five things to checkFive checks before an AI tutor: does it hand over answers, what it stores, age rules, who checks mistakes, what parents see.↗
- Are AI chatbots safe for kids? Questions to ask firstWhether a chatbot suits your child depends on age, settings, supervision and its own rules. Eight questions to ask first.↗
What should I check before I buy a toy or gift?
Two guides for gift-givers: one for toys that listen and talk, one for children who ask how things work.
- AI toys: eight questions before you buyBefore buying an AI toy, check the microphone and camera, recordings, where data goes, live chat, ads, purchases and age rating.↗
- STEM gifts for kids who ask how things work (ages 8 to 10)Six STEM gift types for ages 8 to 10, from building kits to microscopes, and what to check: batteries, small parts, apps.↗
How do computers and AI work?
Plain explanations of the parts, the numbers and the math underneath AI, for ages 8 to 18.
- Parts of a computer, and which ones run AIProcessor, graphics chip, memory, storage, input, output and network: what each part does and which ones run AI.↗
- From bytes to terabytes: how much data does AI use?A byte is 8 bits, and each step up is 1,000 times bigger, with real sizes from one sentence to a web crawl.↗
- The math behind AI, from counting to gradientsThe math AI uses, by age, each with one formula and one worked AI example.↗
- What does STEM mean, and where does AI fit? What each letter of STEM covers, with one AI example for each.↗
What are the words and the history?
Look a term up, or see how the ideas arrived.
- AI glossary for kids and teens24 AI words explained in plain language, each with an everyday example and a short activity.↗
- Computer science facts, each with its sourceThirty checked facts about computers and AI, each with a link to its source.↗
- A short history of AI and computers25 dated moments from Babbage's engines to neural networks, each with its source.↗
How do we talk about AI, and check what it says?
Questions to ask at home, in the car or in class.

How we write these guides
- Answer first. Each guide answers its question in the opening paragraph, then explains.
- Sources named and linked. When a guide uses an outside fact, it names the source and links to it.
- No brand rankings. The guides give questions to ask and types to compare. They do not rank, rate or recommend brands or products.
- No affiliate links. No guide earns money from a link.
- Limits stated. Each guide says what it does not cover.
- Mechna Academy, in its own words. When a guide describes Mechna Academy, it quotes Mechna Academy's own published pages.
- Dated. Every guide shows a "Last reviewed" date.
About Mechna Academy
Mechna Academy is a city of machines for curious children aged 8 to 18, opening first to ages 8 to 10. In each mission, a child guesses how a machine decides, then opens its Peek Hatch to check, changes one thing and tests it on a case it has never seen. Children learn how AI works this way, and they never chat with an AI.
Questions
Parents, guardians and anyone choosing apps, toys or gifts for a child aged 8 to 18. Most guides cover the full age range; the STEM gift guide is for ages 8 to 10. Teens can read the AI literacy and machine learning guides with a parent.
No. The guides give questions to ask and types to compare, not product picks, rankings or affiliate links. Some guides also show how Mechna Academy answers the same questions, in words quoted from its own pages.
Start with ideas, not code: AI learns patterns from examples people choose, it can sound sure and still be wrong, and people decide how it is used. What is AI literacy for kids? explains these ideas for ages 8 to 18. Machine learning for kids, explained with one machine shows them with one example you can try at home with paper and a pencil.
Every guide shows a "Last reviewed" date near the top, so you can see how current it is. Apps, toys, settings and terms change often, so check the product's own pages before you decide.
No. The guides give general information for families, not medical, legal or other professional advice about a particular child. If you have a concern about your child's safety, health or learning, talk to their doctor, their school or another qualified professional.
The first missions are free; membership comes after. Places are limited: we email you when your family's place opens.
